I just went for bloodwork because I am drinking more and my results came back kidney functions elevated, thyroid elevated, sugar 223, calcium elevated. Anyway the vet wants Mom to put me on a low carb diet. Evo is 7% carbs but the protein is high. Does anyone know of a low carb with a lower amount of protein than Evo? We checked Wellness Core and theirs is 12 % carbs. I will be researching this, too, but just wnated to know if anyone already has and what they have found.

Thanks! Purrrrs

Wet food is going to have the lowest carb of commercial diets. Raw probably lower than any commercial.

McDuff you will have to go on wet cat food or raw to get the low carbs. Evo, Wellness, Wellness Core, Weruva,Merricks before grain, Natural Balance Chicken and Liver, also there is some Fancy feast ones too, I can find the list for you that does not contain glutens if you want.
These are ones off the top of my head anyow.

The EVO 95% meats have less protein than the Cat & Kitten. Also NV Instincts 95% meat have even less protein. All are grain free canned.

Hi McDuff,
What did the vet say about the 223 blood glucose? That is considered a diabetic number, though it's not super high, it's out of the normal range. Normal BG levels are 50- 150 with 50-80 being healthy numbers. You might want to ask the vet for a fructosamine test which gives an average of the BG for the last couple weeks and is a clearer indicator of diabetes. Sometimes the blood glucose levels can be elevated due to vet stress, and the fructosamine would give a clearer diagnosis. But since he has been drinking more it sounds like he is borderline diabetic / or diabetic. Catching diabetes soon and getting the cat on a low carb wet diet along with a short course of insulin (if needed) can often put the cat back into normal numbers and allows the pancreas to start functioning again. Sometimes food change is enough, but many cats need insulin - and often it's a short course.

If he turns out to be diabetic, FelineDiabetes.com is a great website and they have a very helpful message board. Again, catching diabetes soon is key. I also want to mention that the label information on pet foods is often not accurate, it's confusing but if you look at Janet and Binky's food charts that can give you good idea of values. With kidney issues, you want to keep the phosphorus levels lower also. There are some canned foods that I have heard of cats eating for kidney issues, I need to find those.
FelineOutreach.com has a lot of good info on diabetes and kidney issues and more (click on education area). Just wanted to share some thoughts smile Good luck!
