here's my problem...

I have one cat, we suspect food allergies...I have her on a perscription diet that is costing me a fortune! ($56 for an 8 lb. bag) plus she gets predisone for polpys in her throat and nasal cavity.

I have one cat (who is kept seperate) that has FIV and throws up if I feed him anything other than Hills Science Diet Sensitive stomach formula.

AND I have an older cat, who just had PU surgery and I worry that he needs something to prevent struvite crystals...(even though doctors tell me he shouldn't have any problems ever again?)

I also have 2 other cats who seem fine with whatever..but prefer the Natural Balance Salmon and Green pea formula...

My question is...what food could I buy that would work for all these problems? I am spending a fortune on food and need to find something that all can eat so I am not buying 3 different bags of food...I just can't afford this..(I owe about $4000 for the one cat who had the PU surgery..so money is a HUGE issue for me now)

Thanks!

I myself feed an all wet grain free diet and some premade raw.
Oreo the only thing I think that you can feed for all cats is a Raw diet, you have to go back to nature basically, this is what an obligate carnivore should eat, and not dry high carb grain based foods. This will be cheaper than the vet prescribed food, and it will help with allergies, crystals, and a host of other things.
Of course education in this matter is key, if you are willing to do some reading about it, and talk to some of the Raw feeders on this board, im sure that you will be very happy with the results.
One good site to start to read is catnutrition.org
I will let the other Raw feeders chime in here.

I have allergies and I started on the prescription diet. Mom wasn't happy with the ingredients and started doing some research. First she switched me to the Natural Balance limited ingredients canned food. Then after some more research she switched me to a raw diet. It's really helped - and not just my allergies. My foster brother had some skin conditions and we suspected IBD too. He's completely better after mom put him on raw. Please check the raw food forum or pm me if you would like any more information. You might also want to check out the kitties with allergies group.

The only food that I would think would work for all is raw.

I also thought raw when I read your post! But, be aware that you have to do research first so that you know what you are doing and that it is somewhat more of time commitment than pouring out kibble. Also, it takes some cats a while to transition, especially those that are fed only kibble.

Try looking at catnutrition.org (as Shadow listed), catinfo.org, rawfedcats.org, mypetcarnivore.com, and felinefuture.com (they sell something, but I believe that they have a lot of very god information anyway).

If you have no desire to try a raw diet, then I would go with a grain free, canned food such as EVO 95% meat or Nature's Variety Instincts 95% meat, but raw would work out to be cheaper.

Thanks for your suggestions! I was expecting most to suggest a raw diet....

I am not sure yet about that, but will look into it...I worry that trying to feed 5 cats a raw diet will cost a fortune too...

thanks!!

Oreo, really, not trying to push the raw, but if you were to really be interested you could try to contact Dillon-Caesar-Charmin-Socrates. She feeds many cats raw and she has posted recently in the Raw Forum. Just FYI.

I feed my 30 cats raw (26 barn cats, 3 "fosters", 1 house kitten). If I can do it so can you big grin

Really, it isn't that expensive. However I don't buy organic meat which some people will. I probably spend $6 - $11 a day depending on what meat they are getting.
