What should I do for this sweet stray? I'm afraid to call shelter because I know he/she may end up euthanized.

I'm sure this kitty was released by a neighbor a couple of months ago (this is the same neighbor who gave away her dog because she "was never home"). About 6 months ago, this neighbor had 2 cats and now none. I saw this kitty several times and noticed it started limping. This morning, in the rain/cold, I saw the kitty trying to catch a squirrel. I gave him/her some kitty food and let it inside. Head buttings/kneading galore! And what a talker. I just can't stand the thought of this poor thing trying to survive on squirrel meat in the cold. Who should I contact to see if someone will give this sweetheart a home? I cannot because of allergies. I live in the MD/DC area.

Are there any no kill shelters or rescues in your area that you could call? Could you foster her til you find her a permanent home? You could make her a webpage on Catster and mark her as adoptable and/or put her on www.petfinder.com as adoptable. You could also put an ad in the paper or on craigslist.com. Be sure to ask for a small adoption fee. Some sick people prey on free cat/kitten ads an they could end up in research labs, as dog-fighting bait, or other horrible ends. Good luck!

Mr. Fez gives good advice, as usual. I'd just like to add a warning about stray kitties. We have one who roams our neighborhood who probably lives somewhere but is outside all day. He happens to look like my late, sweet Ernie. Earlier in the summer, I was able to pet him for just a few seconds and considered it a minor victory. Today, he was on our patio and I went outside to say hello to him. After all, he'd been so friendly last time. After a few pets and ear scratches, he suddenly hissed and a split second later, sunk his teeth and claws into my hand and arm. One bitemark is deep and still seeping blood. There was no warning. I was trained as an animal rescue worker to pick up on signs of an impending attack, but there were none from this cat. Please be careful when you handle it.
