my normally hungry cat shows no interest in food. hes laying around a lot and not very social.

cries when you press on his ribs and lower back. last night he growled when i probed his abdomen

The others are right, you need to take him to a vet. He could be injured or sick or have a blockage. Also any time a cat stops eating they can get a very serious side effect called fatty liver disease where they can go into liver failure. So get to the vet ASAP as your cat may die if you don't.
